Hongliang Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Kumkoi Basin, SE corner Xinjiang. The type section is located at the Yanshui (=Jiantuliang) Ravine (E89°00′, N37°25′), about 10 km southwest of the Ayakkum Lake in the Kumkol Basin, Ruoqiang County, Xinjiang. It was firstly used by the Altun Joint Survey Team of the Xinjiang Petroleum Management Bureau and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps in 1965 in their unpublished manuscript. Later, it was formally named by the Regional Stratigraphic Chart Editorial Group of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (RSCEGXUAR) (1981).
Synonym: Gao et al. (2014a) considered that the Jiantuliang Fm used by the First District Survey Team of the BGMRXUAR during1981-1982 is a synonym of the Hongliang Fm.
Lithology and Thickness
It is mainly characterized by a series of earthy yellow, greyish-green, and grey sandstones and sandy mudstones, interbedded with mudstones, gypsum laminations, and rock salt layers, which produce rock salt and gypsum. Its bottom sandstones produce abundant malachite. The Hongliang Fm contains ostracod fossils, which are deposited in the lacustrine deposits. Its thickness is in range of 1630 to 2135 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
In the type section, the Hongliang Fm unconformably contacts with the underlying Pliocene Shibiliang Fm.
Upper contact
In the type section, the Hongliang Fm unconformably is overlain by the Pleistocene Xinjiang Gr.
Regional extent
The formation is restricted in the Kumkol Basin.
